• Ionizing radiation, stopping in semiconducting components, can corrupt data, interrupt
operations or permanently damage electronic circuitry.
• Passive radiation hardening is achieved by adding metal layers around sensitive
electronics. This is not always possible (e.g. solar panel) and mitigates the radiation
level only.
• For high radiation environments, only semiconductor circuits from old fabrication
process are used with significantly reduced performance, higher cost and higher power
consumption in comparison to currently used components.
