During his time at university, our founder Alex engaged in Homeless Outreach and a frequent discussion at these sessions was whether giving change to those on the streets actually helped them. He thought this was a really important and interesting topic so investigated it further. After discussing the issue with people from local charities, it soon became very clear that they did not think giving change helped, in a lot of cases they thought it caused harm. For example, Thames Reach estimate 80% of those begging do so to support a drug or alcohol addiction.
Despite the above, an estimated hundreds of thousands of pounds are being given in cash directly to individuals on Oxford’s streets each year. We thought there should be a way to harness this goodwill in a productive manner. We thought a solution was desperately needed: with the help of many people and institutions we came up with Greater Change. It is a quick easy way of giving directly to somebody who is homeless or an umbrella group of local charities helping the homeless. If you give directly to somebody who is homeless through our app you can be confident money will be spent on constructive, long term solutions. This is because money is released through a support worker who ensures money is spent effectively.
